You can access our extensive video database 24/7 for self-guided instructions on martial arts self-defense, from white belt (10th GUP) to red belt (1st GUP). Learn the fundamentals of Korean karate as you practice at your own pace with certified masters in the art of Soo Bahk Do®. Build your skills, sharpen your techniques, and master this incredible art in the privacy of your own home. You will be tested for advancement to the next GUP level as you complete each training phase. Virtual GUP examinations (shim sa) are scheduled for the second Saturday in the months of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Black belt (Dan) testing requires an in-person examination by a panel of Federation master instructors at the Regional Dan Shim Sa in your area. Dates and times will be provided.

What is the ranking system at DeJohnette Martial Arts Academy?

We follow the traditional Gup/Dan ranking system, with different-colored belts for Gup ranks (white, orange, green, red) and black belts for Dan.

Do I need to have prior experience in karate to join DeJohnette Martial Arts Academy?

No, we welcome students of all levels, including beginners with no prior experience.

Can I schedule an online assessment of my training progress before the GUP examinations?

We encourage students to schedule Zoom appointments to assess their training progress.

Are there any competitions or tournaments that DeJohnette Martial Arts Academy participates in?

Yes, we participate in local and regional tournaments throughout the year.

Do I have to join a federation?

Yes. The U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation requires all practitioners to become members to authenticate and certify rank and promotions. Membership is also required to participate in local and regional competitions and tournaments.
